There has been an update to the LTF Flight Orders regarding joining.

Previously the Flight Orders stipulated:

  1. Joining straight in on final approach for students or PPL holders is not recommended unless engaged on an instrument approach. 
  2. All student pilots flying solo must make Standard Overhead Joins unless this directly compromises the safe operation of the aircraft.

Revision:

  1. Pilots of LTF aircraft are to join aerodromes using standard circuit joining procedures as laid out in the AIP.
  2. Pilots must ascertain the surface wind, runway in use, and circuit traffic prior to joining the circuit and sequence accordingly.
  3. If unable to ascertain or having difficulty ascertaining the surface wind, runway in use, circuit traffic, or how to sequence; pilots must remain clear of the circuit area. Pilots should consider using the standard overhead join to ascertain the required conditions if appropriate.
  4. If Joining overhead at Wanaka Aerodrome, SOHJ initial altitude is to be a minimum of 2700ft AMSL, and it is recommended to use an altitude of 3000ft AMSL while in the overhead for separation from circuit traffic in the downwind.

It would be worthwhile reviewing these in particular in the Flight Orders themselves.
